How to Install Lindab Steel Guttering — A Complete Guide

Lindab steel guttering is one of the most popular rainwater systems used on new builds and renovation projects across the UK. Made from hot-dip galvanised steel with a polyester powder coat finish, it offers a significant step up in durability and rigidity compared to PVC alternatives — and with the right preparation, it's straightforward to install.

This guide covers everything you need to know, from planning your gutter run to fitting the final downpipe bracket.

What You'll Need

Before you start, make sure you have the following to hand:

  • Lindab half round or rectangle gutters (3m lengths)
  • Fascia brackets (sized to match your gutter profile)
  • Union connectors, stop ends, corners
  • Running outlet(s)
  • Downpipes and fittings (bends, branches, brackets)
  • A chalk line or string line
  • Tape measure and pencil
  • Drill and appropriate fixings for your fascia material
  • Hacksaw or tin snips for cutting

Step 1 — Plan Your Gutter Run

Start by measuring the total length of the eaves to calculate how many 3m gutter lengths you need. Account for any corners, stop ends, or outlets required.

Every gutter run needs at least one outlet connecting to a downpipe. On longer runs (over 6m), consider positioning the outlet towards the centre of the run rather than at the end, so water doesn't travel too far to reach the drain point.

Step 2 — Calculate Your Fall

Guttering must be installed with a slight fall towards the outlet so water drains freely rather than pooling. As a general rule, aim for a fall of 3mm per metre of gutter run.

To set this out:

  1. Mark the highest point of the run at the fascia (furthest from the outlet) — this is where your first bracket will sit.
  2. Calculate the total drop required (run length in metres × 3mm).
  3. Mark the low point at the outlet end.
  4. Snap a chalk line between the two marks — this is your guide line for fixing brackets.

Step 3 — Fix the Fascia Brackets

Lindab fascia brackets should be fixed at 600–800mm centres along the gutter run. On longer unsupported spans or in exposed locations, keep to the tighter end of that range at 600mm,  spacing brackets beyond 800mm can lead to sagging under load, particularly in winter when gutters may hold water or debris

Fix the bracket at the high end first, then the bracket at the low end (outlet end), using your chalk line to keep everything aligned. Fill in the remaining brackets at even spacing between them.

Make sure each bracket is fixed firmly into the fascia board with appropriate screws — Lindab steel guttering is heavier than PVC, so the fixings need to be solid, particularly on the end brackets which take the most load.

Step 4 — Install the Running Outlet

The running outlet sits in the gutter run where a downpipe will connect. It clips into the gutter section and should be positioned directly above the drain or soil stack connection point below.

Fix a bracket either side of the outlet at closer centres (around 300mm) to support the additional load at this point.

Step 5 — Lay the Gutter Sections

Starting from the highest point, lay your gutter lengths along the brackets, clipping each one into place. Where two lengths meet, use a union connector to join them — Lindab unions include an integral EPDM seal, so no additional sealant is required on a new installation.

Where the run terminates, fit a stop end to close off the gutter. Stop ends are universally handed so can be used on the left or right hand side in the half round system,  if you are installing the rectangle system you will require handed stop ends.

Step 6 — Cut to Length Where Required

If a gutter length needs shortening, use a hacksaw or tin snips to cut it to size, deburr the cut edge before fitting and seal the cut end with Lindab Touch Up Paint to protect against corrosion. A smooth edge ensures a clean seal in the connector.

Step 7 — Fit the Downpipes

Once the gutter run is complete, fit the downpipe from the outlet down to the drain connection. Lindab downpipes clip together using push-fit socket joints — no sealant is needed on standard vertical runs.

Use pipe brackets at a maximum of 2m centres to fix the downpipe to the wall, with a bracket as close to each socket joint as possible to provide support.

Where the downpipe needs to offset around a soffit or step in the wall, use offset bends rather than standard 90° bends to keep water flowing smoothly.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Not enough fall — gutters that are level or slope the wrong way will hold standing water and accelerate corrosion at joints. Always double-check your chalk line before fixing brackets.

Bracket spacing too wide — Lindab steel is heavier than PVC. Spacing brackets beyond 800mm can lead to sagging under load, particularly in winter when gutters may hold water or debris.

Downpipe brackets too far apart — unsupported pipe lengths flex in wind and can pull joints apart over time. Keep brackets at 2m maximum.
